A Little Bit of it All

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Here it is - my very first ever blog post on my very first website. I will admit I'm a bit nervous. Not from the standpoint of Interior Decorating or upholstery, slipcovers, window treatments or fabrics or anything along those lines, but from the writing itself. I am hoping to catch your interest and that you will stick around a while and then come back again and again! So here goes!

I first want to welcome you with open arms! Thanks so much for taking the time from your busy schedule to read what I have to say. I hope it's enjoyable and that you can take away some knowledge and gain some inspiration.

A little peek into my life: I have been interested in interior design and decorating for longer than I even knew it was a career. Oh, how I wish that I had started this path many many years before I did. There are so many variations and so many careers in this general category. Living in a small town (such as I do) versus living in a bigger city has its challenges. Rewards too. Living in a smaller town you need to wear many hats to make a living, especially these days. Although I love putting a room together for a client, I also enjoy tearing apart their sofa (oops no more sofas at this point in my life, but definitely a loveseat or chair!) Designing window treatments? Can't think of a more fun thing to do! I was DIYing it long before it was popular (Yet alone being referred to as "DIY")! And DIYing it for others is such a creative outlet for you and they get a one of a kind special item. As you can see, enthusiasm and passion are critical for this career - regardless of the specialty and skills that you hone.

Ok enough about me! Let's talk about a little about design trends. I have been around for a "few" decades and seen things come and go. Every time trends and colors cycle back around it's always with a slight updated twist. Today's current color trend of neutrals has always been around - just not in the limelight so much as it is today. Throughout the ages, the neutrals have always been a big sector of the color palette. Usually, they were thrown in here and there to balance and soften a vibrant color scheme, offering the eye a slight respite from the busy interaction of the main focal colors. But to have them as the main color board is so refreshing. Many years ago when I had an upholstery business alongside a carpet and window treatment store, the owner had me reupholster her 2 sofas in a beige and she redid her wallpaper with an off white string paper. What!? Beige and off white? When there are so many "colors" and patterns ?! Well, let me tell you it was lovely! So peaceful and restful. That is when my love of neutrals was born. And now - I tell everyone "choose neutrals for your sofa". You can never go wrong because color trends come and go, as well as colors you personally like. But a neutral has longevity. Pop a colorful patterned pillow- or 2 or 3 (or more !) on it for that "wow" factor. Or reserve that fantastic fabric for a side chair. That way your sofa will last for years. Make sure you invest in a good quality one that will last!.

Ok enough for now! Thank you for sticking with me to the end! I will be back with more tidbits and design talk. Meanwhile please sign up for email and special alerts. I will be adding products to my website for purchase, and as always I am available for custom upholstery, slipcovers, window treatments and of course design consultations.

Till next time, Happy Decorating!

Deb
